MIOSHA requires construction employers to have an accident prevention program, with a copy at the worksite. Start from 29Safety's Safety & Health Program; Harli drafts the MIOSHA version as a custom program on any plan, for you to review.
What's in your MIOSHA program
Under Part 1 of MIOSHA's Construction Safety and Health Standard, every construction employer in Michigan must develop and maintain an accident prevention program, coordinate it with employees, and keep a copy at the worksite (R 408.40114). These are the parts the rule requires. Harli drafts each one, and the draft is saved in your account for you to review and sign.
Built with your crew, kept on site
A program you develop, maintain and coordinate with your employees, with a copy available at the worksite.
R 408.40114(1)Tools and equipment
Instruction for each employee on the operating procedures, hazards and safeguards of the tools and equipment the job needs.
R 408.40114(2)(a)Site inspections
Inspections of the construction site, tools, materials and equipment, so unsafe conditions that could create a hazard get eliminated. Your program says who inspects and how often.
R 408.40114(2)(b)Recognizing hazards
Instruction for each employee in recognizing and avoiding hazards, and in the rules that apply to their work. Weekly toolbox talks in English and Spanish, signed on the crew's phones.
R 408.40114(2)(c)Harmful substances
For anyone who handles poisons, toxic materials, caustics or other harmful substances: the hazards, safe handling and use, personal hygiene, protective measures and first aid.
R 408.40114(2)(d)Plants, animals and insects
Where harmful plants, reptiles, animals or insects are known to be present: the hazards, how to avoid injury, and the first aid to use.
R 408.40114(2)(e)Flammables and toxics
Anyone who handles flammable liquids, gases or toxic materials is instructed in safe handling and use, and made aware of what the MIOSHA standards require. Training records with alerts before a card expires.
R 408.40114(3)Walk through a sample JHA or a sample toolbox talk, part by part.
Also in Part 1, on every job
A few more Part 1 rules sit right next to the accident prevention program. Your records in 29Safety help you keep up with them.
A first aider on site
A person with a valid first-aid certificate at the worksite, and first aid supplies at each jobsite, checked before each job and at least weekly. First aid and CPR cards sit in the training tracker, with alerts at 60, 30 and 7 days.
R 408.40132(3), (5), (6)Medical help planned ahead
Prompt medical attention arranged before the project starts, a way to reach emergency services, and the site's location posted where the phone doesn't send it to 911. The site-specific safety plan carries the emergency information for each job.
R 408.40132(2), (7), (8)Hazards reported right away
Employees must report hazardous conditions or equipment to you immediately. Your program says how, and near misses get logged in minutes.
R 408.40116Damaged equipment out of service
A damaged or defective machine, tool or piece of equipment is marked unsafe and locked out, made inoperable or taken off the jobsite. A failed daily check pulls a unit out of service.
R 408.40115(1)
